DVLA Driving Licences UK

Apply for your first provisional driving licence
Get your first provisional driving licence for a moped, motorbike or car from the DVLA.

This service is also available in Welsh (Cymraeg).

Apply using your Government Gateway ID. If you don't have one or need to re-register, you'll get an ID as part of your application. If you've already got your provisional driving licence you don't need to apply again to drive a car.

Identity documents needed for a driving licence application
You must send in an identity document with your application unless you have a valid UK biometric passport (where the photograph and signature are on the same page).

You don't need to send your biometric passport in with your application, use the 9-digit passport number instead.

You must send the following identity documents if you don't have a biometric passport:

• a current and valid passport
• a biometric residence permit (BRP) - formerly known as the identity card for foreign nationals
• an European Union (EU) or European Economic Area (EEA) national identity card
• a travel document

You must send the original document with your driving licence application.

If you don't have an EU or EEA passport, you'll need to send in a visa that proves you have permission to live in the UK.

You can't use:
• photocopies or laminated certificates
• certified copies - including those certified by the Post Office document certification service

Track your driving licence application
If you've already made an online driving licence application you can track its progress.

Before you start
You'll need your Government Gateway ID and password.

If you've forgotten your Government Gateway ID or password, you can request new ones.

You'll normally get your driving licence within a week of completing your online application.

Apply for your full driving licence
You can apply for your full driving licence as soon as you've passed your practical driving test. If you have a photocard provisional driving licence, and you haven't changed your name, your examiner will send your driving test pass certificate to the DVLA.

You'll receive your full driving licence within 3 weeks.

View or share your driving licence information.
You can use this service to:
• view your driving record, for example vehicles you can drive
• check your penalty points or disqualifications
• create a licence 'check code' to share your driving record with someone, for example a car hire company

The 'check code' will be valid for 21 days.

You'll need:
• your driving licence number
• your National Insurance number
• the postcode on your driving licence

Check someone's driving licence information.
You can use this service to check someone's driving licence information, eg the vehicles they can drive or any penalty points or disqualifications.

You need:
• the last 8 characters of their driving licence number
• a check code from the driver

You must use the code within 21 days. You can only use the code once - you have to get another code to do another check.

Lost or stolen driving licence:
Get a replacement provisional or full driving licence online with DVLA if yours gets lost, stolen, damaged or destroyed.

You should contact the police if your driving licence is stolen.

To replace your licence you'll need to:
• be a resident of Great Britain (there's a different service in Northern Ireland)
• not be disqualified from driving for any reason
• pay £20 by MasterCard, Visa, Electron, Maestro or Delta debit or credit card
• provide addresses where you've lived for the last 3 years
• Provide your driving licence number, National Insurance number and passport number if you know them.

You can also:

Update your licence:
• Tell DVLA you've changed address.
• Change the address on your driving licence.
• Change the name or gender on your driving licence.
• Change the photo on your driving licence.

Renew, reapply or exchange your licence:
• Renew your driving licence.
• Renew your driving licence if you're 70 or over.
• Renew your short-term medical driving licence.
• Driving licence renewal after 45: lorries, minibuses and buses.
• Exchange your paper driving licence for a photocard licence.
• Reapply for a driving licence following a medical condition.
